Maria Montessori

Maria Montessori (1870-1952) was Italy's first female physician.

Maria Montessori knew what every parent knows – that all children are curious, full of joy for discovery, and eager to try and learn new things. Just like every parent worldwide, she noticed that children’s interests vary with age and maturity. Maria Montessori observed that changes in interests follow a specific pattern that is the same in all children. From the earliest interest in eating independently, learning to walk, learning to talk, etc., to the interest in reading, mathematics, space, etc. She found that children during their different stages of maturity are especially receptive to different types of knowledge. She recognized the value of taking advantage of these interest periods, which she called the “sensitive” periods.

The pedagogy is based on careful observations of child development and a well-prepared environment.

The pedagogy is founded on a philosophy about the interconnection of everything on Earth and the significance of all individuals.
